ZICOMO
Zimbabwe Constitutional Movement (ZICOMO)- SUMMARY
The Zimbabwe Constitutional Movement (ZICOMO) is a transformative initiative designed to empower citizens, strengthen civil society, and promote constitutionalism across Zimbabwe. This five-year program, funded by USAID, aims to bridge the gap between the country's progressive 2013 Constitution and its practical implementation. ZICOMO envisions a Zimbabwe where all citizens are fully aware of their constitutional rights and responsibilities, actively participating in governance processes, and holding duty-bearers accountable for democratic reforms. It seeks to foster collaboration between civil society, citizens, and policymakers to uphold constitutional principles and build a just, equitable society.
Key Objectives
~Advocating for Constitutional Reforms:
ZICOMO empowers civil society to monitor, critique, and advocate for laws and policies that align with the Constitution, creating a movement for reform.
~Raising Citizen Awareness:
Through innovative campaigns, creative media, and grassroots engagement, ZICOMO educates citizens on their rights and responsibilities, fostering a culture of constitutionalism.
~Strengthening Institutions:
The program builds the capacity of civil society and works with state actors to uphold constitutional provisions and ensure the rule of law.
ZICOMO prioritizes the inclusion of marginalized groups, such as women, youth, and ethnic minorities, ensuring their voices are amplified in governance and reform processes. This includes creating women’s and youth hubs, running constitutional summer schools, and engaging with underrepresented communities. ZICOMO represents a bold step toward realizing Zimbabwe's constitutional promise, empowering citizens to demand their rights and fostering an inclusive, democratic future.
